Barbara Walters addressed news of her retirement on Monday's "The View."
News broke last week that Walters plans to retire in May 2014. On Monday, she started the show by saying:
There were many reports last week that I was retiring from ABC and there was an assumption that I would be making an announcement today. The paparazzi were outside my home today... however, here I am, and I have no announcement to make. But I do want to say this: that if and when I might have an announcement to make, I will do it on this program, I promise, and the paparazzi guys — you will be the last to know.
"The View" just returned from a two-week break, and co-host Whoopi Goldberg said that people have been asking her non-stop about Walters' retirement. The news last week came on the heels of reports of other shake-ups at the show: Joy Behar will be leaving this summer, while Elisabeth Hasselbeck's future at the show is unclear.
