WATCH: Carriage House Chef Talks Low Country Cuisine

Proud South Carolina native and Carriage House Chef Mark Steuer has been pulling down high praise for his "low country" cuisine to the Windy City.

Since its opening in mid-September of 2012, the Wicker Park eatery has won over fans in droves with creations like fried chicken thigh served on a malted waffle with maple hot sauce, smoked tomato crème fraiche and their ever-popular sticky-sweet cornbread.

“I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, so it’s called the low country,” Steuer said. “It’s kind of what we based this restaurant off of. It’s called the low country because it’s actually below sea level. So the thing I think is different about the food there is there’s lots of French and Spanish influence, lots of seafood.”
