If you have a loved one struggling with an addiction -- but they think they've got it under control -- addiction specialist and CEO of Change Inc. Brad Lamm shared some great advice when he joined me on Mondays With Marlo. Brad stressed the importance of the four steps to change:
1. Don't go about it alone. Reach out to other people who matter to this individual. Brad prefers gathering everyone around an informal situation, like a dinner.
2. Make an invitation. Get your loved one there.
3. Champion the change. You have to sell this person on a plan. It's not enough to say "we love you and we're worried about you." Make sure you have something you want them to do, and then tell them what it is.
4. Change you. This step is the hardest, Brad warned, but it's also one of the most important. Change your own attitude so that you're setting boundaries and not enabling the addiction.
