Originally a bright spot on NBC's schedule during its first season, "Smash" started Season 2 off on a bad foot. After being off the air for about nine months, the new season debuted to disastrous ratings -- 4.5 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic -- and it only went down from there. Because of the ratings, it wasn't surprising that the network decided to cancel "Smash."
NBC exiled the now-canceled "Smash," which starred Katharine McPhee, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston, from Tuesdays to Saturdays where it will finish out its Season 2 at 9 p.m. ET.
When news of "Smash's" cancellation broke, the cast took to Twitter to reach out to their very vocal and very disappointed fans:
"Smash" is hardly the only show the struggling Peacock network canceled: "1600 Penn," "Animal Practice," "Deception," "Do No Harm," "Go On," "Guys With Kids," "Up All Night," "Whitney" and "The New Normal" also got the axe. Plus, "30 Rock" signed off for good.
