Sen. Levin, D-Detroit, To Join Congressional Investigations Of IRS | The Detroit News

Levin Will Investigate IRS

Washington -- Two Michigan congressional committee chairmen said Monday they plan to investigate the Internal Revenue Service for targeting conservative political groups.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Detroit, said the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations he leads planned a hearing in June on whether the IRS enforced rules for tax-exempt nonprofit groups engaging in partisan politics. But the revelation by an IRS official Friday that the agency gave additional scrutiny to such groups with "tea party" and "patriot" names requires further investigation, he said.
