The New York Mets aren't exactly the model MLB franchise these days: The team is struggling on the field, management is bumbling off of it and the fans can't even keep their feet under them in the stands. But are they representative of all the ills of the modern world? Bob Costas seems to think so.
Costas found some time to take a shot at the New York Mets on Sunday while hosting NBC's coverage of the U.S. Open. The Mets avoided getting swept by the Chicago Cubs at home in a three-game series, as Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. As usual when a team wins via a walk-off homer, the Mets celebrated at home plate.
Costas did not approve.
"And the team 14 games under .500 celebrates as if it just won the seventh game of the World Series. Another indication of the ongoing decline of western civilization," said Costas as NBC showed the highlights.
