"Good Morning America" weatherman Sam Champion reacted to the Supreme Court's rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Prop 8 on Wednesday, saying that his heart was "pounding."
Champion became the first co-host of a network morning show to come out as gay, after the revealed last year that he was engaged to his longtime partner. Champion married in December 2012 in New York City.
After news broke that the Supreme Court had struck down DOMA and cleared the way for same-sex marriage in California, Champion commented on how much the news meant to him:
"I think Gavin Newsom said it amazingly to me. It's very easy to discount this into a legal brief...but this is about people's lives and there are people all over this country who are just looking to know that they're equal and that their feelings for someone they love can be legitimized and is just as right as their neighbors'."
Co-host Josh Elliott embraced Champion as his other co-hosts offered their congratulations.
