Jim Carrey To Assault Rifle Owners: 'I'm Sorry That In My Outrage I Called You Names'

Jim Carrey Apologizes To Assault Rifle Owners

Jim Carrey likes using Twitter on Sundays. Two weeks after using the social media platform to distance himself from "Kick-Ass 2" because of its violent content, Carrey posted a pair of missives on Sunday apologizing to assault rifle owners for some of his past behavior.

Carrey didn't mention specific instances of name-calling, but in the past he's referred to opponents of gun control as "heartless motherf--kers" and "manics":

Carrey has become a vocal and high-profile proponent of gun control. On June 24, he recused himself from supporting the aforementioned "Kick-Ass 2," the violent comic book adaptation about wannabe teen superheroes.

Carrey's decision to back away from "Kick-Ass 2" wasn't embraced by everyone: "Kick-Ass" creator Mark Millar wrote a lengthy response to Carrey questioning the timing of the star's tweets.

"As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I'm baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn't in the screenplay eighteen months ago," Millar wrote. "Yes, the body-count is very high, but a movie called 'Kick-Ass 2' really has to do what it says on the tin."

At Deadline.com, film reporter Mike Fleming put on his op-ed hat to write about Carrey, noting that the actor "completely [blew] an opportunity to use this movie as a platform to discuss" a wide variety of gun-control issues. (Fleming also wondered whether studios would still hire Carrey after his comments, as they could be perceived "like a star who cashed a big check to act in and promote a film, and then turned his back on the second part of that bargain.")

Carrey's performance in "Kick-Ass 2" will be unveiled on Aug. 16. For now, just watch his Twitter feed for more (especially on Sundays).
