It's official: Jason Sudeikis is leaving "SNL."
The actor, who spent two years as a writer for the NBC sketch comedy show and eight as a cast member, sat down with David Letterman for the "Late Show" on Wednesday (above) to put the rumors about his departure to rest.
"I'm definitely done," Sudeikis said when talking to Letterman about how long cast members stay on "SNL." "I'm gonna leave. I'm not coming back next fall."
Though he said it doesn't feel weird yet since he would normally be on summer break, Sudeikis joked, "You start to get that itch probably in August where all these sketch ideas will show up and I'll be like, 'Well, can I make this sketch idea last 90 minutes and turn it into a movie?' Probably not."
But getting serious, Sudeikis added, "It's been fantastic. It's been amazing. I'm really lucky."
In May, fellow "SNL" cast member Jay Pharoah tweeted his goodbye to Bill Hader, Fred Armisen and Sudeikis, but then deleted his revealing 140-character message, kicking the rumors into full blast. While on "The View" shortly thereafter, Barbara Walters pressed Sudeikis about his future on "SNL" until he finally admitted, "I sincerely don't know at this point."
And in a June interview with Modern Luxury magazine, Sudeikis had this to say of his "SNL" future: "You never really leave that place, and it never leaves you. It’s an emotional journey getting through a season, much less the final one.”
Hader announced he was leaving "SNL" in May, just before the final show of the season in an interview with The New York Times, while Armisen revealed his "SNL" departure in late June.
"I think it's clear," he said in an interview with Splitsider. "I didn't do any kind of official announcement, but I really felt like it was obvious. An ending that was a love letter to all the music I grew up with, and also to my friends and to 'SNL' and to Lorne and to the cast. There was a lot of emotion attached to it, but it was a very positive emotion."
Both Hader and Armisen acted in farewell sketches in the final show of the season, but Sudeikis' future with "SNL" remained the least clear until now. He wasn't waving goodbye with Armisen and Hader during goodnights in the season finale, nor was he featured in his own farewell sketch, leading rumors to fester about his "SNL" future until his announcement on Letterman.
