ABC Family has been known to air a show or two with questionable acting. The worst yet may be in their new, so-called "reality" series, "The Vineyard." Hoping to tap into a bit of that "Laguna Beach" magic, this docu-series features a group of twenty-somethings -- who definitely act like they're still in high school -- spending the summer in Martha's Vineyard and working at the "iconic" Black Dog Tavern.
Most of them are shacking up together in a beach house nearby, which means lots of forced drama.
“Get it straight, 'cause you’re just stirring up things for no reason and it’s really unnecessary. I did not come here for that," Katie told Emily at one point. But we kind of think that's exactly why Katie came here.
And then there was this classic exchange between Lauren and Heidi: "You know what you did!” Lauren said.
“What did I do?” Heidi asked her. Now put those two sentences on an infinite loop and wish you were anywhere else. And, of course, the premiere ended with a fight on the beach. Because that's what reality television is now.
Critics weren't liking the premiere at all. Zap2It's Andrea Reiher asked "When does the shark eat all these dopes?" She described the cast as "mostly vacuous." David Hinckley of The New York Daily News said that "The Vineyard" has a "been there, done that vibe," but it's been done better before.
Still looping: "“You know what you did!” “What did I do?” “You know what you did!” “What did I do?"
Will you come back for more with "The Vineyard"? The "reality" continues on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC Family.
