Oprah Winfrey and David Letterman are old pros when it comes to talk shows, each with decades under their belt. When Winfrey dropped by "Late Show," they talked about a talk show secret, and it's all about careful wording.
Know how talk show hosts seem to be big fans of all of their guests' projects? Is that really possible? Of course not! There's a code they use to talk about those projects they weren't so thrilled about.
"What’s your code?” Winfrey asked Letterman.
Letterman told her that his code was "'That was really something,’ because I know that was your code.”
“Yeah, that is my code," Winfrey admitted. "Because when you say, ‘Mmm, that is really something,’ it doesn’t mean that it’s ... really something, that movie.”
“It’s just what you can say," Letterman agreed. He then joked that Winfrey's new film, "Lee Daniels The Butler," was "really something," before admitting that he genuinely enjoyed it. The movie hits theaters on August 16.
Fans will have to listen for the code when Winfrey sits down for a talk with the fresh-out-of-rehab Lindsay Lohan later this month for "Oprah's Next Chapter." She's taking a big chance on Lohan, as well. Winfrey signed her for an eight-episode docu-series for OWN, and reportedly gave her a budget of $2 million and two personal assistants. Hopefully, Winfrey won't be saying that Lohan's new series is "really something."
