"Xena: Warrior Princess" could be making a comeback and series star Lucy Lawless has an idea of how that should happen.
The series about Xena, a butt-kicking warlord-turned-hero, and Gabrielle, her best friend/soulmate, lasted for six seasons and spawned a dedicated following. The show went off the air in 2001 with Xena dying: her head was cut off and she was cremated.
"The fans were always devastated that we cut Xena's head off. We thought we were telling a strong storyline and it was hilarious, but it broke their hearts," Lawless told Stuff.
Fans have clamored for a "Xena" movie since the series ended, but so far the character has only returned via comic books. That all might change. In May, Lawless tweeted: "Had an interesting call from a chap who wants to re-invigorate the #Xena brand. You guys may have started something." However, she cautioned there's a lot of "red tape" around the property and urged fans not to get too excited yet. That hasn't stopped the actress from dreaming up how the character will return.
"In my dreams it would be that Renee [O'Connor, who played Gabrielle] and I, and Ted [Raimi], who played Joxer, would come back and basically stick Xena's head back on her and go on a quest," Lawless said. "At the end you introduce this new Warrior Princess, hand it over and let them run with it. So we could put the family back together, give the fans what they want, reinvigorate the brand and hand it on to a new generation."
Lawless has discussed the idea of a "Xena" reboot and possible hiccups before. "The whole trouble with it was there was some sort of glitch in the paperwork in ownership. The movie company doesn't own all the rights to it and they don't want to share, so -- it's just kind of gone sour for all these years," she told The Huffington Post in February 2012. "I shouldn't say they don't want to share, but there's not enough in it for them if they have to share the rights with somebody else. By the time somebody realizes it's a completely wasted franchise and they should reinvigorate it, I'm too old to play her."
