Woman Awakes From Coma, Discovers She's Almost 4 Months Pregnant

Last September, Gemma Holmes was driving a scooter in Hilperton, England, when she collided with a parked car. The impact reportedly caused her to fly across a busy road and slam into a lamp post.

Holmes suffered horrific injuries, including severe head injuries and a broken back. In a coma, the 26-year-old was airlifted to the hospital, where doctors didn't think she'd survive.

Remarkably, about three months after the crash, Holmes awoke from the coma. Not only was she still alive, but she was told that she was almost 4 months pregnant.

According to SWNS.com, Holmes suffered amnesia as a result of the accident. She couldn't remember what had happened over the last three years, including how she had met her baby's father. (The child's dad has since been located, but he and Holmes have not reunited romantically.)

"I was just in shock," she said of receiving the surprising news.

Doctors warned her that keeping the baby would not only be potentially dangerous to her health, but that she would also not be able to have any surgery on her back until the child was born, according to the Wiltshire Times.

Holmes was adamant, however, that she would keep her baby.

"I just thought that if this little baby inside me had managed to survive the awful crash, then he was meant to be," she told ITV This Morning, according to the Daily Mail.

During her pregnancy, Holmes reportedly didn't take painkillers out of fear that the medication would harm her unborn child, thus enduring tremendous pain from her injuries.

But for Holmes, it's all been worth it.

In May, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Rueben Miracle Holmes via cesarean section.

"I couldn't stop crying when they first showed him to me, because he is my little miracle baby. I was just so happy to see him after everything we've been through," she told SWNS.com.

In a few months, Holmes says she will be able to undergo the brutal procedure -- doctors will need to break her back and place metal plates in it -- which could one day allow her to get her back on her feet.

She will likely be able to learn to walk again in about two and a half years.

"Rueben is the best thing to ever happen to me. I may not remember how he came to me but I've got the rest of our lives to make up for that," Holmes told Reveal.co.uk in May.
