Pat Robertson Threatens Lawsuit Against 'Mission Congo' Documentary Filmmakers

Pat Robertson Threatens Lawsuit

"Mission Congo" made its debut on Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, shining a spotlight on Pat Robertson's refugee charity, Operation Blessing. The televangelist is reportedly already "considering legal action" against Lara Zizic and David Turner, the filmmakers.

Robertson used his television show "The 700 Club" to raise funds for the Rwandan refugee crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, the planes that were supposed to be used for medical supplies were alleged to be carrying diamond-mining equipment to the Robertson mining operation according to a report in The Nation by Bill Sizemore in the 1990s. A subsequent investigation by the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs found the charity "willfully induced contributions from the public through the use of misleading statements and other implications," though no prosecution took place.

Chris Roslan, a spokesman for Operation Blessing, told the Huffington Post that the the "allegations in the production company's film promotion, the listing on the film festival website and the story in The Guardian newspaper are false and defamatory. We are considering legal action against all offending parties."
