A planned sequel to "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" has turned to dust. As first reported by TheWrap and confirmed by a press release from Constantin Film, "Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes" has been delayed indefinitely.
“Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of 'City of Ashes' was a decision we did not take lightly. But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place," executive producer Martin Moszkowicz said in the release. "'The Mortal Instruments' series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a bestselling book series. While taking Cassandra Clare's vision to the screen, we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise."
"Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" was a high-profile flop for Constantin and Screen Gems, a Sony Pictures property. The film, which starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, opened on Aug. 23 and grossed just $28 million in North America. "City of Bones" received scathing reviews from critics as well, with only 14 of 113 reviewers giving the film a positive notice on Rotten Tomatoes.
