Nick Clegg held a thank-you party last night at Admiralty House for those who were involved in the fight for same-sex marriage, particularly those who recorded Out4Marriage videos that were first published in the Evening Standard. It did not go unnoticed that Stephen Fry and Hugh Grant were among the guests, while the most famous person at David Cameron’s thank-you event back in July was sports presenter and author Clare Balding.
Fry, who had to leave before the Deputy Prime Minister gave his speech, said: “Both Clegg and Cameron showed extraordinary courage by advancing same-sex marriage, particularly in the case of Cameron, when some in his party were so opposed to it,” said Fry.
In his speech, Clegg said that in a few months’ time most people would wonder “what all the fuss was about”, adding that we should be more concerned about the gay rights issue in Russia.
Clegg was even given a hug before he went on stage — by Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, the head of Reform Judaism (the reform Chief Rabbi), who supports same-sex marriage.
