Boston Apartment Explosion: Police Say Man Lost Both Hands In Chemical Accident

Man Loses Hands In Apartment Explosion

A man blew off both of his hands Friday morning when some chemicals he combined exploded inside his apartment, Boston police say.

Authorities are investigating the reason the man was mixing the substances and why they detonated, Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said, according to the Boston Globe. The explosion occurred around 9 a.m.

A woman who lives in a nearby building described the blast in gory detail.

I was on my deck and there was a loud bang,” Lindsey Bell told the Boston Herald. “It sounded like a car crash. Then I saw the firetrucks pull in ... I saw them taking him out on a stretcher. He had no hands. They were bloody stumps and they were wrapping them with bandages.”

Commissioner Davis said that there was no drug lab or sign of terrorism.

The man was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for treatment, according to WHDH. Emergency responders put out a small fire and the area is now considered a safe environment.
