As someone who is familiar with the nuances of both female-dominated and male-dominated workplaces, Barnard College president Debora Spar knows that there are some fundamental differences between the two.
Spar delved into her experience working in both arenas -- before Barnard she was at Harvard Business School -- during a HuffPost Live segment this week, calling for more diverse workplaces for both men and women.
“I think I have been really lucky in the regard that I did get to operate in a very male place and a very female place -- and I think that it’s worth noting that they operate differently,” Spar told host Alyona Minkovski. “It’s not a normative thing. I don’t think a women-dominated workplace is better than a male-dominated [workplace], but it is different.”
Spar highlights the different workplace characteristics in her new book, “Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection” -- some of which she says are backed by evidence, and others were discovered through her career.
"I think men have a better sense of 'This is my boss and I listen to him or her because they’re my boss'; women tend to behave in a more relationship-based way," she said. "I don’t say this as one is better or worse than the other, but they feel very, very different."
