Man Allegedly Killed Wife To Avoid Alimony In India, Testimony Reveals

Man Allegedly Killed Wife Over Alimony

A Indian man allegedly killed his wife to avoid paying alimony, a court in Dubai heard this week. Along with an accomplice, the 23-year-old man was accused of strangling his wife to death and disposing of her body on a roadside in mid-March.

The man and another 28-year-old male face charges of premeditated murder, The Khaleej Times reports.

Testimony in Dubai by the victim's father revealed a tumultuous marriage, including allegations of physical abuse and infidelity. But the accomplice's testimony seems to have clinched the case: The friend testified the husband wanted to divorce his wife, but worried that Indian law would require him to pay a monthly alimony -- something he could not afford.

The accomplice previously admitted the pair had strangled the woman during initial questioning by police, which led to his arrest. On Sunday, he pleaded not guilty and told the court his confession was coerced, according to the Deccan Herald.

Police already suspected the victim's husband in her death, as he fled the country the same day her body was discovered. Authorities were subsequently able to track him down.

The case is expected to return to court in October.
