'Closets Are For Clothes' Video Campaign Highlights National Coming Out Day

WATCH: Activists Strip Down To Celebrate National Coming Out Day

Oct. 11 is National Coming Out Day, and a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists and allies are stripping down for the occasion.

Titled "Closets Are For Clothes," this video attempts to bring visibility to the closet as a metaphor for LGBT individuals forced to hide their sexual orientation, and celebrate the opportunity to come out in solidarity with other members of the community.

Sponsored by Heterosexuals for Same-Sex Equality (HSSE) and The People Project, the founders of both organizations state at the end of the video that its intention is to "show that there are enthusiasts, allies and supporters all over the place of various shapes and sizes. We also wanted to show that coming out can be a very liberating and empowering act."

While LGBT-identifying individuals are certainly encouraged to come out whenever and at whatever point they feel most comfortable, National Coming Out Day occurs in conjunction with LGBT History Month -- an entire period of time dedicated to remembering and celebrating LGBT history.
