While it's not a groundbreaking show, Sean Hayes' return to TV was more than welcome on "Sean Save the World." In the series, he plays a dad named Sean who's taking on a terrible new boss, the stress of a teenage daughter, and his overbearing mother, Lorna, played with wicked delight by Linda Lavin.
Lavin and Hayes already displayed great comedic chemistry in several of their exchanges. "I don’t know anything about parenting!” Sean laments to his mother.
“Nobody does. It’s all a mess," Lorna tells him. "Fish have it right. Just drop ‘em, and go.”
“You tried that once at a food court, but I found you," Sean said.
Over at Zap2It, Sydney Bucksbaum thought it felt a bit cliched, but it was still enjoyable. "There's a reason why Hayes is so loved by the TV community," she wrote. "He has comedic talent, great timing, and a natural fluidity that makes even the broadest jokes work. His energy works well in the new show's tone, and he can make even the most slapstick physical pratfalls seem exciting, new, and most importantly, funny.”
Vulture's Matt Zoller Seitz agreed, giving all of the credit for the show to its stars. He said that it might not be the best new comedy -- or even that well-written -- but the cast make it worth watching. But not all critics agree, with The Hollywood Reporter blasting the show. They summed it up by writing, "Nobody has any idea what the hell Sean is saving, but it sure ain’t this show."
