David Letterman Tells Seth Meyers To Change 'Late Night' Name

Seth Meyers dropped by "Late Show" and David Letterman had some advice for the upcoming host of "Late Night." Letterman suggested that Meyers change the name of the show, as he'd done when he took on the show.

"When we took over the show years ago, it was ‘The Tomorrow Show,'" Letterman said. "So you had the ‘Today’ show, ‘The Tonight Show’ and ‘The Tomorrow Show’ and I thought, this is perfect!” He suggested that Meyers bring back "The Tomorrow Show" name.

“That’s the perfect trilogy right there, and I’m giving this to you free!" Letterman said. "I’m putting a nail in my own coffin here.” According to Deadline's Dominic Patten, Letterman has probably been wanting to tell NBC what to do with their late-night lineup for years. But it doesn't look like Meyers is taking the bait.

“I wish we’d talked, like, yesterday," Meyers told him. "We just printed the mugs."

According to Letterman, he and his crew picked "Late Night" off of a list. He still thinks "The Tomorrow Show" is the better name -- but why wasn't it good enough for him to use back then? Of course, Letterman then turned "Late Night" into an institution, followed by Conan O'Brien and then Jimmy Fallon. Meyers would probably like to continue that legacy, instead.

One decision Meyers has definitely settled on is who he wants as his first guest. He wants his former "Weekend Update" co-anchor, Amy Poehler. In an interview the pair did for Gotham Magazine, Poehler jumped at the chance. "Yes, dude, of course. Are you kidding? I’m going to come on your show and never leave," Poehler said. "I’ll hide under your desk."

Seth Meyers will be taking over "Late Night" in early 2014 when Jimmy Fallon moves up to "The Tonight Show." For now, Meyers can be seen on "Saturday Night Live" every Saturday at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC. "Late Show with David Letterman" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.
