Englewood Fire: Woman, 11-Month-Old Baby Killed In Extra-Alarm Blaze In Chicago

A 49-year-old woman and a 11-month-old baby were killed in an extra-alarm fire that spread to three homes in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood Tuesday morning.

The blaze began just before 11 a.m. in a single-family home in the 6700 block of South Emerald Avenue and was put out by about noon, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

But that was too late for the 11-month-old and 49-year-old, identified by CBS Chicago as Mi’leyah Johnson and Jenny White respectively. The 11-month-old was found on the first floor of the building, while the woman was found on the second floor after the blaze was out.

A neighbor had tried to enter the home but could not come to their aid because the blaze had already engulfed the structure, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The home served as a daycare center, according to DNAinfo Chicago.

The blaze also heavily damaged the homes to the immediate north and south of the home where the fire began. Its cause is not yet known and an investigation is ongoing.
