Democrat Barbara Buono has lost the New Jersey gubernatorial race to incumbent Chris Christie (R).

Christie was widely expected to win the race, and according to the AP, was looking to become the first Republican running statewide to break 50 percent since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

Early on Election Day, Buono told the AP she thought Democrats would head to the polls to support her, unlike four years ago when Christie defeated Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine.

"They were unhappy with an incumbent governor, but couldn't bring themselves to vote for Christie," she said. "That's not going to happen."
