'Almost Human' Premiere: Karl Urban, Michael Ealy In Robot Buddy Cop Show

The two-night premiere of "Almost Human" kicked off on Fox with a look into the year 2048. Technology and crime have expanded exponentially, leading to the inclusion of androids into the police force. Detective John Kennex (Karl Urban) doesn't like these "synthetics," at least until he spends some time with Dorian (Michael Ealy). This older model is different -- able to reason and experience emotion.

There's a looming conspiracy involving an organization called The Syndicate, and it turns out John's girlfriend was a part of it. She was also behind the injury that cost him a leg and his human partner years ago. But that threat takes a backseat -- for now -- to the delightful interplay between John and Dorian. A buddy cop show is only as good as its buddies, and these two are simply fantastic together.

TV Fanatic's Miranda Wicker loved the dynamic between John and Dorian, too. "Kennex might be the human component, but Dorian is the heart of the show," she wrote. "While his interactions with other people ... will no doubt prove beneficial to Kennex, his partnership with Dorian will be what ultimately saves him. I, for one, am ready for the adventure.”

Zap2It's Rick Porter thinks the show is off to a decent start, but also wrote that the creators liberally borrowed from the classic film "Blade Runner." This makes the viewing experience deja vu for sci-fi fans.

The premiere event continues on the show's regular night and time, Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
