'Breaking The Faith': Helping Women Escape FLDS

TLC dipped into darker territory with "Breaking the Faith." The new series follows a group of young men who have vowed to help girls escape from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The FLDS is the infamous Mormon cult overseen by convicted and incarcerated pedophile Warren Jeffs.

The premiere introduced viewers to the girls hoping to escape, including 24-year-old Marie. Her reasons were absolutely heartbreaking. "I want to be happy, and it’s something I’ve never experienced," she said. Zap2It's Jean Bentley called that confession "heartbreaking."

Marie went on to add, "I’ve never been on an airplane, I’ve never been on a vacation. I’ve never been anywhere exciting. I’ve never actually done anything fun ... I don’t have what I know I could have if I would just leave. Running away from everything would be the best thing.”

Variety's Brian Lowry of Variety says it's a well-made and entertaining docu-series. "The producers have cleverly punctuated the program with news footage and taped interviews or recordings featuring Jeffs — whose disembodied voice oozes with creepiness — grounding it all with a sense of authenticity and jeopardy.”

"Breaking the Faith" premieres Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on TLC.
