Robbery Suspect Dead In Apparent Suicide After 5-Hour Standoff: Cops

A robbery suspect in Southern California has taken his own life after a standoff with police that lasted nearly six hours.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, entered a Rite-Aid store at a La Crescenta shopping center shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, NBC LA reported. He stole prescription drugs at gunpoint before fleeing into a Verizon Wireless store, KTLA reported.

Inside the wireless store, witnesses say the man threatened to take hostages, but everybody managed to run away before he had the chance. Police surrounded the store for more than 5 hours, trying to persuade the man to surrender as he threatened to kill himself.

When SWAT members finally entered the store, they found the suspect was dead “apparently by his own hand” according to the the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Crescenta Valley Station's Twitter account.
