Chicago Toddler's Death After Being Mauled By Dog Investigated As Homicide

A dog mauling is responsible for the death of a 2-year-old girl who had been left unattended by her grandfather in Chicago, officials say.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports 2-year-old Jah’niyah White was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon at Jackson Park Hospital after she was injured at her maternal grandfather's home in the 3300 block of East 91st Street in the city's South Chicago neighborhood.

An autopsy on Sunday determined the girl died from injuries sustained in a dog attack and that she had been neglected, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The girl's death is being investigated as a non-criminal death investigation. The state's Department of Children and Family Services is also investigating the grandfather's neglect and abuse allegations, the AP reports.

A friend of the girl's paternal grandmother told the Sun-Times the family is "just really in pieces right now."
