Australian Man Accused Of Trying To Steal Gasoline, Lit Himself On Fire

Man Lit Cigarette, Then Himself, On Fire

He wasn't the brightest accused thief -- that is, until he set himself on fire.

A 26-year-old Australian man was allegedly trying to steal gasoline from a car when he decided to light a cigarette, the Herald Sun reported.

In surveillance video, a fireball can be seen as the man accidentally lights the siphoned fuel on fire with his cigarette.

According to Adelaide Now, police arrived at the parking lot and saw the man had badly burned legs.

"He was trying to get the fuel out of the car by punching a hole in the tank - that's when the explosion happened," parking lot owner Angus McDonald said.

The owner estimated that the damage to the cars and property would cost around $110,000.

According to vehicle website Jalopnik, the man, whose name has not been reported, was charged with arson and illegal interference with a motor vehicle.
