Golden Globes Best Director Nominees Include Steve McQueen, Alfonso Cuaron

The Golden Globe Nominees For Best Director Are ...

Steve McQueen, Alfonso Cuaron, David O. Russell, Alexander Payne and Paul Greengrass were nominated for Best Director by the Golden Globes on Thursday.

McQueen, who directed "12 Years A Slave," becomes only the second black filmmaker ever nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the Best Director Golden Globes award. Spike Lee was cited in the category for "Do The Right Thing" back in 1989.

Cuaron, who like McQueen is a first-time Globes nominee, directed "Gravity," one of the year's biggest hits with both paying audiences and critics. Both McQueen and Cuaron are favored to earn subsequent Best Director nominations from the Academy Awards.

Greengrass received his nomination for "Captain Phillips," which also earned nods for Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Actor (Tom Hanks) and Best Supporting Actor (Barkhad Abdi).

Russell was cited for "American Hustle." That film grabbed nominations for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Actress - Musical or Comedy (Amy Adams), Best Actor - Musical or Comedy (Christian Bale), Best Supporting Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best Screenplay (Russell and Eric Warren Singer).

Payne was nominated for "Nebraska," which like "American Hustle" scored a wealth of nominations, including Best Actor - Musical or Comedy (Bruce Dern), Best Supporting Actress (June Squibb), Best Screenplay (Bob Nelson) and Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards take place on Jan. 12, 2014. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will act as hosts for the ceremony, reprising their emcee roles from last year.
