In a candid interview with Giuliana Rancic, "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star NeNe Leakes revealed what may have been the secret to her landing her "Housewives" gig. Apparently, her nerves got the best of her when the casting director was heading over to meet her. "I had wine instead of having breakfast," Leakes admitted.
Because of this, Leakes said she answered the door in very dramatic fashion, saying, "Hellooooooo, and welcome, honey!" Of course, Leakes' over-the-top personality is one of the main draws for the series. That personality -- possibly loosened up by wine -- won over the casting director, and the rest is reality television history. "Atlanta" premiered in 2008 and quickly became the franchise's most popular iteration.
Leakes has gone on to become a star in her own right, outside of the show, but that intense work and travel schedule came with a price. The reality star was rushed to the hospital in November with a blood clot in her lungs. Leakes told E! Online's Mark Malkin, "I'm not 100 percent, but I'm trying to get there ... It's been tough, but I've been pretty strong. I'm coming back."
NeNe Leakes can be seen every week on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on Bravo.
