Man Gets 12 Years After Raping Homeless Teen, Dipping Head In Cooking Oil

A sexual abuse victim advocacy group is sounding the alarm this week about a Northern Ireland man who received only a 12-year sentence for raping and abusing a homeless teen.

Over the course of three years, the convicted abuser stubbed cigarettes out on the victim's body, ripped her earrings out and poured cooking oil over her head before raping her, according to a list of charges obtained by the Belfast Telegraph.

The victim was 15-years-old when the abuse started. It only ended after the teen escaped her abuser.

The convicted rapist has not been named to protect the identity of his victim.

"I understand the judge imposed a number of conditions along with the 12-year jail term, but I feel there are grounds for a tougher sentence," Helena Bracken, of Nexus victims counseling service, told the Telegraph. "The graphic details of this case, although they were so difficult to read, do demonstrate just what sexual abuse translates to. Sometimes those two words 'sexual abuse' do not always cover the reality and nature of what a victim goes through."

News of the case comes just one day after Matt Barnett, who was accused of raping Kansas teen, Daisy Coleman, was convicted of only a misdemeanor charge and allowed to serve no jail time.

In August, a former Montana teacher who raped a 14-year-old student received just 30 days in jail. The sentence sparked outrage and lead to calls for a new trial.
