Barkhad Abdi is truly the captain now. The 28-year-old was nominated in the Oscars' Best Supporting Actor category for his debut role in "Captain Phillips." Abdi plays Muse in the Paul Greengrass film, the Somali pirate who led a raid on the Maersk Alabama in 2009 and would eventually take the ship's captain, Richard Phillips, hostage. In the film, which also scored a Best Picture nomination, Phillips is played by Tom Hanks, an unfortunate snub in the Best Actor race.

"After we'd done the training for about a month and a half, we were like, 'OK, we're going to see Tom now,' Paul took us on the side and said, 'No, you guys are not going to see Tom until the first scene of the movie,'" Abdi, who before being cast in "Captain Phillips," was a cab driver in Minnesota, told HuffPost Entertainment last year. "After we finished the scene, I was like, 'I can't believe I'm doing a scene with the Forrest Gump guy!'"

Since the release of "Captain Phillips," Abdi has expanded his celebrity encounters to beyond just "the Forrest Gump guy." Ahead, the seven best Instagram photos posted by Barkhad Abdi, Oscar nominee.
