The Colby Fire in the San Gabriel Mountains can be seen from space, but photos snapped an elbow's length away reveal another important perspective about how the wildfire is impacting residents all over Southern California.
Residents in San Gabriel Valley, close to the wildfire's edges, posted photos of themselves donning medical masks to protect themselves from the smokey, soot-filled air. Others took shots of the burning mountains, close to where they live and work.
Meanwhile, residents in downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood, about 30 miles away from the fire, captured shots of an ominous gray smoke cloud creeping into their otherwise blue, cloudless skies.
So far, one person suffered minor burns from the wildfire, almost 2,000 residents have been evacuated from the San Gabriel Valley area, and at least two structures were destroyed by the fire, reports the Associated Press.
The Colby fire has charred more than 1,700 acres, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department's most recent update from 1:51 p.m. says that they have zero percent containment. About 700 fire personnel were deployed to battle the blaze, reports the Los Angeles Times.
