Oscars Best Picture Nominees Include 'Gravity,' '12 Years A Slave,' 'American Hustle'

The Best Picture Nominees Are ...

"12 Years A Slave," "American Hustle" and "Gravity" were among the films nominated for the Oscars' Best Picture award. The trio of acclaimed features were expected to earn nods following an awards season of plaudits and honors ("12 Years A Slave" and "American Hustle," for instance, won Best Picture awards at last weekend's Golden Globes ceremony).

Six other films were nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her, "Nebraska," "Philomena," "The Wolf of Wall Street"

"Gravity" and "American Hustle" led all films with 10 nominations each; "12 Years A Slave" was right behind those feature with nine nods.

"American Hustle," "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Gravity" and "12 Years A Slave" were nominated in the Best Editing category, an important predictor for Best Picture. Every Best Picture winner since 1981 has also be nominated in the Best Editing category.

Last year, Ben Affleck's "Argo" won Best Picture (and Best Editing), becoming the first film to earn the Academy Awards' highest honor without a corresponding nod for Best Director since 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy." (Affleck was a shocking snub at 2013's Academy Awards in the Best Director category.) Anywhere between five and 10 films could have been nominated for Best Picture, a rule change based on preferential voting that was installed in 2011. (Films selected as Best Picture nominees must receive five percent of first-place votes from AMPAS members.)

The 86th Annual Academy Awards are set for March 2. Ellen DeGeneres will host. Head here for a full list of the Oscar nominees.
