5 Things Oprah Teaches Us About Aging Gracefully On Her 60th Birthday

5 Things Oprah Teaches Us About Aging Gracefully

Oprah Winfrey, the Titan Of All Media, turns 60 today. Although she's admitted that the milestone birthday is the only one she's ever had "a hiccup" about, she's also described herself as being more secure in her own skin than ever before.

No doubt Oprah has been an inspiration to people around the world. Her rags-to-riches story -- she's gone from being a little girl growing up in abject poverty in rural Mississippi to become a self-made mogul worth billions -- has touched untold numbers of men and women, boys and girls.

And -- for those of us at Huff/Post50 -- she's also taught us how to age with grace. Here are just five ways in which Oprah has motivated us to be all we can be -- no matter what our age.

1) Oprah embraces her age.
"But I know for sure that the pathway to your best life isn't the route of denial. It's owning every moment. Staking a claim in right now. And, with gratitude, embracing the age you are. So I'm embracing the age I am...59. And I'm looking forward to the next step of the journey."

2) Oprah seeks to define her own life.
"If you make a choice that goes against what everyone else thinks, the world will not fall apart."

3) Oprah celebrates growing older as a blessing.
"I refuse to let a system or a [youth-obsessed] culture or a distorted view of reality tell me that I don't matter. I know that only by owning who and what you are can you start to step into the fullness of life. Every year should be teaching us all something valuable. Whether you get the lesson is really up to you."

4) Oprah encourages women not to lie about their age.
"You're denying, energetically, the years you have earned here on the planet earth. You're denying those experiences. You are denying your very existence by trying to lie about your age."

5) Oprah wants everyone to honor their calling.
"Ignoring your passion is like dying a slow death. Your life is speaking to you every day, all the time -- and your job is to listen up and find the clues. Passion whispers to you through your feelings, beckoning you towards your highest good. Pay attention to what makes you feel energized, connected, stimulated -- what gives you your juice. Do what you love, give it back in the form of service, and you will do more than succeed."
