Here Are The Answers To The Questions Everyone's Asking About The Maserati Ghibli

Maserati’s minute-and-a-half long magnum opus to the new Ghibli may not have been the best Super Bowl commercial, but it was certainly the most surprising.

In an era when Super Bowl ads are released online before the big game, the Maserati ad came without warning. The spot is unexpected and shrouded in mystery, considering it takes more than a minute for the car to finally appear. After reemerging in the United States marketplace a little more than a decade ago, Maserati appears ready to enter the mainstream with its new Ghibli.

But what is a Ghibli, and why should you want one?

Well, we’re here to help you out:

  • What is it?

The Ghibli is Maserati’s smallest four-door model, measuring 11.5 inches smaller than the bigger, more expensive Quattroporte.
  • How do you pronounce it?

Per Car and Driver: “The proper way to phonetically say 'Ghibli' is gib-lee. For the record, the car is named after a North African windstorm.”
  • Is it fast?

Well, we have yet to drive it, but Maserati seems to think it’s pretty quick. The company states the base 345-horsepower twin-turbo V6 model will go from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 165 mph. The 404-horsepower S Q4 model will do the run from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and top out at 175 mph.
  • How much is it?

Maserati markets the Ghibli as the least expensive model in its range of vehicles; however, expense is a relative term. The car starts at $66,900, according to Maserati. We played with the automaker's online configurator and were able to load one up to a price just a little shy of $100,000.
  • Does it really sound as good as in the commercial?

Yes, it really does. We had the pleasure of running into a Ghibli in Manhattan's West Village neighborhood over the weekend, and, even at normal engine speeds, the car sounded incredible.
  • I’m rich and interested -- what should I compare it to?

Undeniably sexy and priced at more than $60,000, the Ghibli is a mid-size alternative to so-called "four-door coupes" like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe and Audi A7/S7.
