Conner Mertens, First College Football Player To Come Out As Bisexual, On His Big Decision

HuffPost Live's Mike Sacks caught up with Conner Mertens, who made headlines last month when he became the first active college football player to come out publicly when he announced to his team (and the world) that he is bisexual.

Mertens, who came out in an emotional letter which he posted on Twitter, told Sacks he was inspired by British Olympic diver Tom Daley as well as recent victories in the national battle for same-sex marriage in his decision.

"[I am] hopefully laying a trail for somebody else to do something like this, and have it be easier for them," the Willamette University kicker said. "People that have changed, which is a tiny, tiny fraction of people ... they weren't close friends anyways."

As far as how he's been treated by his teammates in the locker room, Mertens said it was "same old, same old. Business as usual."

Last month, the 19-year-old told The Oregonian he has dated women in the past, but is currently in a relationship with a man from Portland, Ore.
