It's "Romeo and Juliet" with aliens ... very pretty aliens. Actually, this is The CW, so you kind of knew everyone on its latest show, "Star-Crossed," would be pretty. It's the story of an alien ship that crashes on Earth in 2014. Ten years later, the alien survivors are living in an internment camp, but a group of alien teens are being enrolled in a local high school. Cue high school "star-crossed" romance!
To add a little weight to the central relationship, Emery harbored Roman in her garage briefly when they were both children. This was just after the crash of Roman's ship. Now, they're both older and feeling drawn to one another's hotness. Alien's have the same hormones, apparently. Oh, and the aliens and humans are on the brink of outright war.
Entertainment Weekly's Samantha Highfill put it in millennial language. "If 'The Fault in Our Stars' met 'Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century' in a bar, and the two had a one-night stand, their love child would look a lot like 'Star-Crossed,'" she wrote. "I didn’t have high expectations going into the pilot, which ended up being a good thing, because this show pleasantly surprised me.”
Over at the LA Times, though, Robert Lloyd thought it a too-familiar CW formula. "It's the usual dance of insiders and outsiders, mean kids and weirdos, of Sharks and Jets, Montagues and Capulets biting their thumbs at one another in the school corridor while one special guy and girl fall in love," he wrote. At least it can be said that The CW knows its audience, if the success of all those other shows is any indication.
