'Spat At, Sent Porn And Sexually Harassed': What It's Really Like To Be A Female Vicar

Where do you stand (or possibly kneel) on the issue of women in the Church? Personally (better lay my cards on the table here), I’m an agnostic who nonetheless believes that women should have identical rights to men in terms of a Church ‘career’. (And yes, I think the Vatican ought to be getting with that particular programme, too).

But for anyone whose image of what life’s like for a contemporary female priest today is shaped by the oh-so-jolly-japes of The Vicar of Dibley, Julia Ogilvy’s Women In Waiting: Prejudice at the heart of the Church will come as a shock. By comparison with the ‘trials’ faced by Dawn French’s character, the roadblocks and insults encountered by these women are positively chilling, and frankly demoralising.
