Actor and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights activist George Takei will be honored this year with a spot in the Seattle Gay Pride Parade -- as the event's grand marshal.

Parade organizers made the announcement this week, citing Takei's compelling voice for the LGBT community.

“As an actor, social justice activist, social media power, author of Lions and Tigers and Bears and Bears: The Internet Strikes Back and Oh Myyy! There Goes the Internet, and star of [the] upcoming Broadway musical Allegiance, Takei has used his roles and public persona to advance LGBT and human rights around the world," organizers said in a statement.

Since coming out in 2005, Takei has used his platform to speak out about issues affecting LGBT individuals. Last month, Takei published an open letter on his Facebook calling for a boycott of Arizona in the wake of lawmakers attempting to pass a "religious freedom" bill that would allow them to discriminate against the LGBT community.
