David Zinczenko, author of Eat It To Beat It!, explained why diet soda is actually so unhealthy, despite its deceptive lower calorie appeal.
The issue with diet soda is that the artificial sweeteners used are actually 200-300 times sweeter than natural sugar.
“This sets you up with a crazy sweet tooth,” David explained. “This conditions your body to think that all sweet foods are coming into your stomach, so the pancreas starts releasing insulin. Now you’ve got all this insulin trying to run around and figure out what to do,” he said.
Some people chew gum to ward off hunger cravings, but David also warns against this choice, as most gum contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener.
“Aspartame gives you your fix and goes right to your brain, bypassing your stomach,” he explained. “This sets you up for that same sweet tooth effect.”
Some healthier, low-calorie soda alternatives David recommends: seltzers, sparkling juices or ginger ales made by brands like Izze’s or GuS. David also recommends purchasing an at-home SodaStream to carbonate and create your own fun, healthy beverages.
