UN's Lakshmi Puri Discusses Pope Francis' Stance On Women's Rights

Pope Francis has been praised for many of his reformist initiatives, but is he doing enough for women's rights?

Lakshmi Puri, the Deputy Executive Director of UN Women joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modaressy-Tehrani to weigh in on what she hopes for from the Vatican.

The Commission on the Status of Women concluded its meeting in New York last week after two weeks of negotiations about female empowerment. The Vatican entered the discussion with a specific list of requests, particularly with regards to the importance of the family unit, according to the Guardian.

Though Puri was reluctant to weigh in on internal Church matters, she expressed her appreciation that "His holiness and the Church seems to be very committed to the global causes of peace, of development, and of people's human rights."

She continued, "And in that context, we very much expect them to be supporting all aspects of women's rights."
