The idea of "flat" workplace organization gained traction earlier this year when online apparel retailer Zappos announced it would do away with a traditional corporate hierarchy.
The technical term for this workplace strategy is holocracy. Mashable describes it this way: "Everyone in the organization sets up a constitution with rules to adhere to. The group decides to distribute tasks. Those responsible for tasks own them. There is no micro-management."
HuffPost Live spoke with Anna McGrath, co-founder of WonderWorks Consulting, to get to the bottom of how a holocracy works and what benefits it brings to an office.
"Taking management out, from the point of view of just not having people micromanaging and watching over people do work, I actually think that's a useful shift. But it's not just simply taking people out. It's allowing those people who were in leadership roles and management roles to be able to really do the great work they are talented at doing, not really just simply overseeing someone," McGrath said.
