Gabriel García Márquez's Death Mourned By Obama, Shakira And More

Novelist Gabriel García Márquez was inspired by the mysticism of his native Colombia but, when news of the Nobel laureate’s passing began to circulate on Thursday afternoon, the entire world began to mourn the death of a literary legend.

Within minutes an outpour of grief began to consume Twitter and “Gabo,” as he was often called, became a trending topic worldwide -- and he wasn’t alone. Hashtags of #GraciasGabo (ThankYouGabo), the titles of some of his greatest novels began to trend as well, as fans across the globe began to cite some of Márquez’s most memorable writing.

Colombian singer Shakira joined millions of her compatriots in mourning one of the countries greatest icons and posted a picture on Instagram with a final goodbye message to the author on her website:

Dear Gabo, you once said that life isn't what one lived, but the life one remembers and how he remembers it to retell it... your life, dear Gabo, will be remembered by all of us as a unique and singular gift, and as the most original story of all. It's difficult to say goodbye to you, with all that you've given us! You will always be in my heart and in those of all who loved and admired you. Shak

Dozens spoke about the life-changing experience of reading classics like One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love In The Time of Cholera while citing their favorite quotes.

Actor James Franco, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, President Barack Obama and more took to Twitter to pay their respects. Take a look at how journalists, actors, politicians and more came together to mourn the passing of “Gabo.”
