Lara Spencer has been promoted to co-host of "Good Morning America," ABC News' new president James Goldston announced Friday.

Spencer, who rejoined ABC News three years ago, was most recently the show's lifestyle anchor. She now has the same title as George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts.

Goldston announced the news in an email to the ABC News division Friday, praising Spencer's "style, humor, sunny confidence, wonderful journalism and storytelling" abilities.

"Lara is clearly an essential ingredient in the success we have enjoyed and I am so pleased to announce that Lara has been elevated to co-host of the program along with Robin and George," Goldston said. "Please join me in congratulating Lara on this well-deserved promotion as we all take a moment to look back on two remarkable years."

Spencer's promotion comes after news anchor Josh Elliott left the program for a new gig at NBC Sports. The addition of Elliott and Spencer to the "GMA" lineup was key in launching the show past "Today" and claiming the #1 ratings spot two years ago. With Elliott gone, Michael Strahan will join the morning show part time.
