Bigger Loser Season 15 Runner-Up David Brown Discusses How He Stays Motivated

After this past season's highly controversial "Bigger Loser" finale, the show's runner-up joined HuffPost Live to explain how he took what learned on the ranch home with him.

When David Brown's wife passed away from brain cancer nearly 10 years after they were married, he was left with two little girls to care for, and the stress of it all made him forget how to take care of himself. Brown was diagnosed with a plethora of illnesses related to his obesity, including hypertension and sleep apnea, and after unsuccessfully trying to lose weight, he finally had enough.

"I think we all have to get to that place where we get real with ourselves that if something doesn’t change now, I’m in trouble," Brown told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani. "For me it was a very real wake-up call that I had to face the truth that, man, I was sick, I needed help and I needed it now."

Brown joined the show at 409 pounds and left 222 pounds trimmer. He said the hardest part about staying in shape is not remembering to work out more and eat less, but realizing and remembering that your reason to stay healthy is worth it.

"When your 'why' is big enough, and you’re willing to go deep and ask those hard questions about yourself, like, 'Why am I really worth it, who in my life is really worth making the ultimate change for?' When your 'why' is big enough, your excuses become small," Brown said. "You don’t hit the snooze bar, you don’t pull the sheets over your bed on a Saturday morning. You get out of bed and you go for a walk and you go do the hard things."
