Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway Running For Governor

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway will run for governor in 2015.

Conway, a Democrat, officially announced his candidacy in a Tuesday statement following months of speculation that he would jump in the race.

“As we choose our next governor, now is not the time for inexperience or empty promises,” he said. “Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and continue to move Kentucky forward, and we begin doing that by building a great team."

As the Courier-Journal noted Monday, Conway is the first Democrat to enter the 2015 race. However, several others have expressed interest in running, including Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo and State Auditor Adam Edelen. On the Republican side, businessman Hal Heiner announced his candidacy in March.

Conway has served as Attorney General under current Gov. Steve Beshear since 2008. In 2010, Conway ran for U.S. Senate, eventually losing to Republican Rand Paul.

In the statement, Conway also announced his selection of state Rep. Sannie Overly as his running mate for lieutenant governor.

"The strength of this gubernatorial ticket is bolstered by Rep. Sannie Overly’s record of accomplishments," Conway said.
