Whale Almost Swallows Diver By Accident (VIDEO)

CLOSE ENCOUNTER: Whale Almost Accidentally Swallows A Diver

When Rainer Schimpf was diving off the coast of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to watch the annual sardine run, he came across an unexpected visitor -- a 50-foot-long, 40-ton Bryde's whale.

The sardine run attracts a variety of predators, including sharks and birds, but Schimpf was not prepared for the whale who was attempting to go for a shoal of fish nearby. Schimpf was right in the line of attack, but luckily the giant swerved just at the last minute to avoid the diver.

Schimpf fortunately escaped with his life, and a whale of a tale.
