Sen. John Walsh (D) and Rep. Steve Daines (R) will compete in the general election for Montana's Senate seat, The Associated Press reports.

Walsh beat out rancher and former banker Dirk Adams and former Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger in the Democratic primary, while Daines beat state Rep. Champ Edmunds and candidate Susan Cundiff in the GOP primary.

Early polls have shown Daines with a double-digit lead over Walsh.

Walsh was appointed to the seat in February when Max Baucus (D) resigned to become ambassador to China.
